Peganum Harmala, also known as Harmal, is a perennial plant native to Africa, commonly cultivated in the Middle East and parts of South Asia, including India Pakistan. It is also to as Syrian rue and Wild rue. A primary application of Harmal is in dye production. The seeds are known to produce a red dye known as “Turkey Red,” which is typically used in dyeing Western carpets. Harmal seeds possess a sharp, bitter taste and are considered highly potent. They contain several alkaloids like Harmine, Harmane, Harmaline, Vasicine, and Vasicinone. Additionally, they exhibit properties that are aphrodisiac, antispasmodic, blood-cleansing, analgesic, cooling, and anti-fungal.
